Instructing Peter directly

Peter Causton is authorised by the Bar Standards Board to accept instructions directly from members of the public under the Public Access Scheme.

The majority of Peter’s practice is undertaken on instructions from solicitors and other professional clients. He does, however, accept Public Access instructions in appropriate cases.

Not every matter is suitable for Public Access. Depending upon the nature of the case, it may be necessary or preferable for a solicitor to be instructed.

Conduct of litigation

Peter is not authorised by the Bar Standards Board to conduct litigation. This means he cannot, for example, issue proceedings, file documents at court on your behalf, serve documents, or go on the court record as acting for you. A Public Access client remains responsible for those steps, or a solicitor must be instructed to take them.

Peter can advise, draft documents for you to file, and represent you at hearings.

Making an initial enquiry

So that conflicts and availability can be checked, please provide:

• Your name
• Your contact details
• The broad nature of the case
• The names of the opposing parties, for conflict purposes
• The court and case number, if applicable
• The date of any forthcoming hearing or deadline
• A brief explanation of the work required
